Arts and Crafts for Parent and Child
An adult can prepare for this craft by punching a number of snowflakes before introducing their child to the craft; otherwise, the child could become bored while waiting. Plan on making thirty-to-fifty shapes for each child before you start and then more snowflakes as needed.
If you need an activity to entertain kids while you create more shapes, have them decorate a blank sheet of paper with geometric shapes colored in to make multi-colored snowflakes. Another option is to spread a thin layer of glitter glue over a sheet of plain or patterned paper. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly and then punch shapes.
Christmas Crafts for Kids
Wreath – Prepare this craft by punching snowflake shapes in different shades of green. Cut a donut-shape circle from a sheet of cardstock and cover with a thin layer of glue. The kids can then set the snowflakes over the circle. Add more glue when necessary so the shapes are layered and completely hide the base circle.
Garland – Prepare for this craft by punching the snowflakes in different shades of green. Cut curving pieces of paper in the length of the area you wish to decorate, a mantle, window, or table edge. Because this is a physically long shape, don’t make it too wide or it could be frustrating to embellish with snowflake shapes. Decorate. Fill in any thin areas or gaps with paper or ribbon bows and hang your decoration.
Mobile – Children ages nine or ten and up will have an easier time manipulating this delicate Christmas decoration. Punch five-to-ten snowflakes from white or silver paper. For this project you will also need a needle and white thread and a dowel, bamboo skewer, or hoop. Connect the snowflakes to the hanging piece with thread. Hang the snowflakes at different lengths so the shapes don’t tangle as easily but also to make the mobile look more interesting. Use more thread, or yarn, to hang the completed mobile in a window or wherever you’d like.
Parent and child can work together on these Christmas decorations that they can use to adorn their home. Of course, you can also use the snowflake shapes to create handmade cards or embellish premade Christmas cards.
