Don't spend lots of money buying costumes when kids can turn to craft supplies and recyclable materials and create all sorts of make believe fun.

If you have a child who loves dress-up and make believe then chances are she or he never has enough fun, new things to add to their costume box. The following crafts allows kids to take items headed for the recycling bin and transform them into costume accessories that they can wear with other items they already have.

Bracelet Kids’ Craft

You will need a toilet tissue tube, aluminum foil, small shell-shape macaroni, food coloring, white glue, scissors and water.

  1. Cut down the length of the toilet tissue tube. Then cut off a section about 1 ½” wide. Trim the corners so they are slightly rounded.
  2. Cut a piece of aluminum foil that is twice as big as the section of tube that you cut – you’ll be covering the inside and the outside of the tube.
  3. Cover the tube with the foil, shiny side out. Smooth the foil around the inside and outside of the bracelet.
  4. Color the macaroni with food coloring-tinted water. The shell-shape macaroni will be your gemstones. Of course, if you have some plastic gemstones in your craft box, you can use these. After the pasta is a bright color, remove it from the water and set it on a plate to dry.
  5. When these gemstones are dry, glue them onto the silver bracelet with dabs of glue.

Headband or Crown Craft for Kids

At a minimum, you will need a strip of stiff paper and tape to make a headband. Make a slightly more elaborate headband with fabric. Headbands that sit over the forehead and around the head have been worn by many people. Make the headband from a two-inch wide strip of heavy paper or wallpaper and tape the ends so the headband fits snug around the head.

You can also cut a strip of fabric and use fabric glue to attach the ends. If the fabric is too flimsy, glue it to the strip of paper. Use metallic fabric and hot glue on plastic gemstones to create a crown.

Loop Earring Craft

You’ll need two plastic milk bottle caps, some colored string, and an adult who can use hammer and nail poke a hole in each cap. Cover the milk caps with glitter, sequins, stickers, or anything else that would make the earrings as fancy as you want.

Cut two pieces of string about six-inches long. Push the string through the holes in the bottle caps and tie into loops. Hang the loops over your ears so the bottle cap earrings rest near your ear lobes.
