For children (or adults) who've learned how to do a single crochet stitch, this is an easy pattern to follow.

This simple crochet pattern for a hat works in a round, so there are no pieces to sew together when finished. The pattern is written out instead of using abbreviations to help the new person to crochet.

Materials for a Crocheted Hat

Use a crochet hook I-9. Alter the size of the hat by using a hook one size smaller or one or two sizes larger to fit different size heads.

Use a 4-ply medium weight worsted yarn. Acrylics work as well as wool or wool blends.

Stitch markers will mark the beginning of each round (or row).

Crochet Pattern for a Hat

  1. Chain two stitches.
  2. In the first chained stitch, make six single crochet stitches.
  3. Put a stitch marker in place.
  4. Make two stitches in each of the six single crochet stitches for a total of twelve stitches. Move the stitch marker and continue to move it after each round.
  5. Make two single crochet stitches in one stitch; make one single crochet stitch in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern for the round for a total of eighteen stitches.
  6. In the next row, make two single crochet stitches in one stitch; make a single crochet stitch in the next two stitches; repeat the pattern for the round, creating a total of twenty four stitches.
  7. Make two single crochet stitches in one stitch; make a single crochet stitch in each of the next three stitches; repeat for the round, creating a total of thirty stitches. (Notice that each row increases by six stitches worked evenly around the crown of the hat.) So far, a flat circle is being created.
  8. Make two single crochet stitches in one stitch; make a single crochet stitch in each of the next four stitches; repeat for the round, creating a total of thirty-six stitches.
  9. Make two single crochet stitches in one stitch; make a single crochet stitch in each of the next five stitches; repeat for the round, creating a total of forty-two stitches in this round.
  10. Make two single crochet stitches in one stitch; make a single crochet stitch in each of the next six stitches; repeat this pattern for the round, creating a total of forty-eight stitches.
  11. Make two single crochet in one stitch; make a single crochet stitch in each of the next seven stitches; repeating this pattern for the round, creating a total of fifty-four stitches.
  12. Make two single crochet stitches in one stitch; make a single crochet stitch in each of the next eight stitches; repeating this pattern for the round, creating a total of sixty stitches.
  13. The increase rows are finished. Make a single crochet stitch in each of the sixty stitches. Keep working around until the hat covers the ears. End the hat here or add another inch for a brim (changing the color if desired). Make a slip stitch, cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Simple Crocheted Hat Variations

Work two fine weight yarns together. Work a medium-weight yarn together with a ribbon or an eyelash yarn that won’t make the hat any bulkier. Or, crochet a thicker yarn, such as a chenille yarn, by itself. Make the hat in one color or with one type of yarn and then change the color or the yarn for the brim.

Using the medium-weight yarn, change colors every so many rows for stripes. End a round with a slip stitch, before chaining one stitch with the new color and work the new stitch. Collect and save small amounts of yarn and then use this yarn stash to make a crazy, multicolored hat.

Make a yarn braid or yarn rope in complementary colors and sew it around the bottom of the hat instead of crocheting a fold-up brim.

This pattern allows beginners to use a single crochet stitch to create a hat in a few hours. Future hats can be made with the same pattern, just change the yarn, work two yarns together, create stripes, or add a new color at the brim.
