Fun and chunky bracelets are easy to make once you learn this simple zigzag fold that uses bright ribbons.

Whether you need a bracelet to go with a costume or you want bracelets to go with an everyday or special outfit, the interesting folding pattern for this kids’ craft will create eye-catching jewelry. You need several inches of stiff ribbon and some fabric glue. Excluding the drying time for the glue, you can make one of these bracelets in minutes and then head out the door.

Craft Supplies

Use ½” to 1” wide ribbon for this project. You will want ribbon that is stiff enough to fold. If you only have sheer, delicate ribbon, you can still try this project; the end result will be more like a soft swirling twist. A sturdy grosgrain ribbon will hold its shape. Satin ribbons can also work. Each type of ribbon will create a different look.

I didn’t try making this bracelet with wired ribbon. Although the shape would stay crisp, I’m not certain how comfortable it would be to wear.

You can use any width ribbon for this bracelet. Use very wide ribbon and the result may be too overwhelming on your wrist. Skinny ribbon can be difficult (but not impossible) to fold; you’ll need to be patient.

You’ll want 9” to 12” each of two pieces of ribbon. You will also need a small amount of fabric glue.

Color and Craft Ideas

You will want to use two different color ribbons to show off the pattern of this bracelet. Neutral colors: black, brown, tan, white, gray, silver, gold, copper all pair well. You can also pair a color with any neutral.

Analogous color combinations use colors that are next to one another on the color wheel. These colors are harmonious and pleasing to the eye. Complementary colors are those opposite one another on the color wheel. Complementary combinations are bolder.

How to Craft Ribbon Bracelets

  1. Cut two pieces of ribbon, one of each color, 10” long.
  2. Hold the two pieces at a right angle. This will look like an “L.” Glue the overlapping pieces. If the glue oozes through the ribbon you’ll either have to wait for it to dry before continuing or you can wrap the glued ends in a small piece of plastic wrap or aluminum foil so the glue doesn’t seal other layers of the bracelet.
  3. Take one end of ribbon and fold it over the other piece. Then take the second piece and fold it over the first piece. Continue back and forth until you come to the end of the ribbon. This is the Jacob’s ladder fold. Hold the last overlap in place with more fabric glue.
  4. Bend the ends of the strip together and hold it around your wrist. If the bracelet is too big, add glue where needed and trim the excess ribbon. Glue the ends together to create a circle. Your bracelet is complete.

This quick bracelet uses ribbon folded in a zigzagging pattern called the Jacob’s ladder fold to create bracelets with a crisp or softly twisted look. These bracelets work up so quickly you can make one for every outfit or give them as gifts.
